Exposing the Reality: Crime Increases with Greyhound Bus Terminals

In the heart of Philadelphia's historic Old City, Concerned Old City Neighbors (COCN) continues to stand vigilant against threats to our community's well-being. As we adamantly oppose the proposed Greyhound Bus terminal at the Auto Park garage on S. 2nd Street, recent events in Houston's East End serve as a stark reminder of the potential consequences associated with such facilities.

A Tale of Two Cities

In January 2024, Magnolia Park residents in Houston found themselves grappling with the aftermath of a Greyhound terminal transfer to their neighborhood. Like us, they were blindsided by the sudden relocation, with no prior consultation or consideration of their concerns by the authorities. As COCN closely monitors developments, the parallels between their situation and our own are unsettlingly clear.

Rising Concerns and Crime Rates

The concerns voiced by Magnolia Park residents echo the sentiments of Old City residents. Fear of increased traffic, crime, and disruptions to the community's fabric loomed large in their minds. Sadly, their fears were realized when city data revealed a disturbing trend: a significant uptick in reported crimes following the terminal's relocation.

Connecting the Dots

The correlation between Greyhound bus terminals and increased crime cannot be ignored. In November, before the terminal transfer, the East End saw only three reported crimes. However, in December, the first month after the terminal's relocation, reported crimes surged to 11, primarily consisting of theft, trespassing, and assault.

A Call to Action

As guardians of Old City's legacy, COCN cannot idly stand by while our community faces a similar fate. The implications of the proposed terminal extend far beyond mere inconvenience; they threaten the safety, security, and character of our neighborhood.

Standing Together

COCN urges all concerned citizens to join us in our fight against the Greyhound Bus terminal proposal. Together, we can send a powerful message to decision-makers that the well-being of our community cannot be sacrificed for the sake of corporate convenience.

Conclusion

The events unfolding in Houston serve as a cautionary tale for Old City. We must heed the warning signs and take decisive action to protect our neighborhood from the detrimental effects of a Greyhound terminal. Let us stand united in defense of our community's safety, security, and vitality.
